The Verge is seeking a highly talented video director to join our science video team in creating unique non-fiction video content for our main YouTube channel and social platforms. Our video staff is part of The Verge’s editorial team; this is a job for journalists and storytellers above all.

As a Director, you will be embedded on our science video team, creating videos for YouTube, OTT, and any new emerging platforms. You’ll create original and serialized content with the video team, and identify articles on our website that will translate into awesome video. Your primary focus will be directing and editing, though you may also script copy for video as needed, and contribute graphics, stop motion, or animation. You will have the support of the producers on your team, but will be encouraged to wear many hats from story to story! This position offers creative freedom to jump into the deep end of the internet backed by kick-ass editorial support. Enthusiasm, leadership, an ability to juggle multiple projects, and initiative to kick-start projects in a busy work environment is a must.

Responsibilities:

Shoot and edit weekly science videos for The Verge’s YouTube channel, OTT apps, and social platforms Pitch new ideas for videos and formats Create shot lists, and help manage pre-production for videos Direct and coach on-camera editorial talent Support Producers to ensure deadlines are met while maintaining Verge quality standards Assist Producers with larger productions (shooting, lighting, editing) when needed Follow the latest news and trends related to The Verge’s coverage areas, particularly science

WHO YOU ARE The ideal candidate will be able to craft and produce cinematic moments while filming in a field or controlled studio setting, and will have extensive experience editing and elevating footage shot into clear and compelling narratives. Motion graphics is a plus. On camera ambition is welcome. We’re looking for a strong storyteller and visionary — people who are dialed into content that performs on the internet as well as a passion for telling stories about everything The Verge covers: technology, science, entertainment, transportation, politics, and design.

Qualifications:

Professional experience in directing and editing Demonstrated storytelling capabilities with background in nonfiction storytelling / journalism Proficient in Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop a must with Cinema 4D a plus High end shooting capability and familiarity shooting with Sony and Canon Cinema line is a plus Eagerness and ability to chase, own, and follow up on compelling stories Strong collaboration skills a must Strong communication skills a must Desire to conceptualize, develop, and produce both new series and formats Keen eye for aesthetics and visual storytelling Strong interest in The Verge’s coverage areas If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! WHERE YOU’LL WORK Must be located in San Francisco, CA or New York, NY. This is a Flex opportunity.
