Telcos must change for podcasting to take off in africa – Farida Idris

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 30 – Farida Idris, the Group Commercial Director at Capital FM in Kenya, recently participated in Broadcast Media Africa’s (BMA) third online forum, which explored “Community Broadcasting – Use Podcasting To Maximum Leverage”.

During the conversation, Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) asked whether creating one area of focus in podcasting was likely to result in the deterrent or attraction of advertisers, sponsors and investors. Ms Idris supplemented by stating that this method was likely to attract sponsors; however, internet connectivity and data costs were still a significant hindrance in reaching revenue-generating goals.

According to Idris, telcos need to be on board, and through affordable data bundles, the broadcasting media space, especially podcasting, would reach its maximum potential.

The Group Commercial Director further stressed that the current data environment favoured affluent neighbourhoods as these areas can afford and access unlimited internet connectivity through fibre and uncapped connections.

The online forum was an initiative by Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), in partnership with 2GwanaMedia, to ”Strengthening Community Radio Broadcasting in Africa by supporting and promoting the value of community broadcasting across the continent.
