Kast Media Announces Newest True Crime Podcast Based on the Infamous 1984 Murder of Laura Miller

Los Angeles, CA (May 23, 2022) – Kast Media, the creators behind the hit true crime show The Opportunist, announced last week at IAB Podcast Upfront the release of their newest investigative true-crime series, Vigilante, which is set to air on May 23, 2022. The five-part show, hosted by journalist and private investigator Allie Conti (New York Times, Vice), will explore the history of Tim Miller, a famous search-and-rescuer who helped to locate more than 300 missing persons, and how he became consumed in his own daughter’s murder.

“The more involved I became with this case, the more I started to question Tim’s unusual methods as a detective,” says Allie. “But then Tim came through at the last possible second and really seemed to solve the murder. All in all, it was such a thrilling—and at times frightening—experience putting together the pieces of this story, and Kast Media is the ideal partner to help share what I uncovered with audiences.”

In the first season of VIGILANTE, Allie explores the human cost of Tim’s singular obsession with his daughter’s murder—from the people he’s falsely accused in the past, to the current girlfriend he’s put in the crosshairs of a convicted killer. As Allie prepares to interview the suspect in person, she grapples with whether she might be the latest victim of Tim’s vigilantism.

This new investigative series from Kast Media is an inside look into the mind of a real-life vigilante and takes you on a journey into both the triumphs and mishaps that dot his decades-long career. What’s more, both Tim and his suspect share a curiously similar background. And as the story unravels—and as Allie is put into uncomfortably close contact with a dangerous suspect—the distinction between “hero” and “villain” gets blurry.

“Kast’s approach to the investigative storytelling side of the podcast industry is to craft franchises around a singular concept,” says Colin Thomson, CEO of Kast Media. “In The Opportunist, we explored the ways in which the simple and nearly ubiquitous character trait of opportunism can lead people down a sinister path. With VIGILANTE, we’re exploring stories of people who, for better or worse, decided to take the law into their own hands. Tim Miller’s story was immediately compelling, but only after we started digging deeper did we realize how apt the term ‘vigilante’ really was in his case…”

With previous success in the talk show space via The Twilight Effect and The Viall Files, VIGILANTE is Kast Media’s latest addition to their narrative slate, joining Nighty Nighty and their most recent history podcast, Scoundrel: History’s Forgotten Villains. Launching multiple Kast Originals in the past year, each Kast Original show launch succeeded in ranking #1 in their genre (Apple & Spotify third-party rankings). The slate of the first three original narrative podcasts achieved over 8 million downloads. The Opportunist, Kast’s first narrative Original, was the 19th largest new podcast of 2021.
