Saagar Enjeti & Krystal Ball, co-hosts of Breaking Points, on set

Podcast: Breaking Points

Hosts: Saagar Enjeti and Krystal Ball

What’s it about: An anti-establishment American news show that brings together views from the left and right sides of the political spectrum

The Skim

For 3 years, Krystal and Saagar’s skeptical but inclusive approach to politics attracted a large, diverse audience to their YouTube show called Rising—but editorial control belonged entirely to The Hill, a D.C.-based political newspaper. Breaking Points was the duo’s vehicle for going independent, and they partnered with Supercast to make it happen.

  • “Subscription is at the heart of our economics because we're funded by our audience. Our only boss is our audience.” Paid memberships allow Saagar and Krystal to be entirely fan-supported, freeing them from advertising pressure on their editorial content.
  • “Supercast is a way for anybody out there who has an audience to form a connection with that audience.” Saagar and Krystal love that Supercast makes it easy to directly own the relationship to their audience, communicate with their fans in a variety of ways, and offer an extremely simple subscription experience.
  • “If you bet on yourself, the size of the market is bigger than you could have ever, ever imagined.” Leaving an established show to go out on their own was a risk, but Krystal and Saagar’s fans came through in force. Thanks to a well-crafted launch developed in partnership with Supercast, more than 10,000 people pledged their support in the first 2 days and the subscriptions continue to roll in.

The Numbers

Supercast partnered with Breaking Points to refine their messaging and build a premium program that reflected the diversity of the audience and created multiple entry points, including monthly, annual, and lifetime subscriptions.

Initially, the revenue from the lifetime memberships gave Krystal and Saagar the confidence to hire a full production team for their show. The consistency of direct fan support allows them to continually invest in show production, which in turn, expands their audience.

“When I first saw Supercast, I couldn’t believe how easy it was for listeners. For us as creators, Supercast’s ability to deliver premium content to any podcast player, plus their backend payment processing and analytics, has been completely invaluable. They were by far the best platform we looked at — we couldn’t have launched this subscription program, with this much success, any other way.” - Saagar Enjeti
