The New Statesman, our founding title, is the leading progressive political and cultural magazine in the United Kingdom. Established as a weekly review of politics and literature in 1913, the New Statesman is celebrated for its dynamic and liberal politics, its intelligence, its range of opinions and the quality of its writing and analysis.

We launched 107 years ago as a journal for “rational and scientific method”. Since then, we have brought a liberal sensibility, sceptical politics and an open mind to everything that we do. In this new digital era, we continue to be committed to truth-telling and journalistic excellence. Now our goal is to expand our coverage internationally as we analyse and explain the defining political, economic, cultural, technological and social issues of our time. In addition to the New Statesman our group’s titles cover a wide range of topics from consumer luxury to capital markets. And across the group we investigate and interrogate the key issues shaping the world today from technological disruption to the transition to clean energy.

Our mission is to understand and then explain these key issues. We do that through the New Statesman and our network of titles, showing how the issues are converging and why they matter so much to our readers and partners. As a digital business in the media sector, we will grow our technology and titles, innovating through our products and content in order to be a valuable, successful enterprise. About the Role:

The New Statesman is looking for a creative video editor and motion designer to make editorial video content for our website and video channels. The successful candidate will join a new team during an exciting time of growth as we undertake an ambitious digital expansion to bring our quality journalism to new audiences. The role reports to the Executive Producer, Audiovisual.

General Responsibilities:

Help to grow audiences by creating engaging video and motion graphics content to the highest standard Deliver content for distribution across multiple digital platforms including the New Statesman website and social media. Contribute to ideas generation and forward planning, helping to identify stories with potential for an engaging visual treatment Work with journalists and editors to bring stories to life with video and motion graphics Handle multiple concurrent projects ensuring all work is delivered to deadline Occasionally shoot video footage yourself.

Skills & Experience:

At least 3 years experience making journalistic video and motion graphics content, ideally within a team at a major news brand or broadcaster. Top-notch motion design and video editing skills, with experience using Adobe CC software. Up-to-date understanding of the conventions of short-form video for web and social. Provable track record of making video that engages audiences and expands brand reach. Strong understanding of post-production workflows and the technical requirements for delivering video projects to multiple platforms. Experienced in journalism with a working knowledge of UK media law. Excellent organisational skills, with experience managing multiple concurrent post-production projects. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Shooting skills and experience an advantage.

An accomplished visual storyteller, full of ideas to help communicate complex stories through video A keen observer of design and visual trends, producing content that feels creatively fresh and ahead of the curve – with an impressive showreel to match. A creative thinker, well-versed in design and video editing best practice. An expert user of Adobe Creative Suite programmes including After Effects, Premier, Photoshop and InDesign. An interest in politics, global affairs, economics and the ideas that shape our world. Highly organised, able to manage multiple competing priorities to deliver projects on deadline. An excellent communicator: diplomatic, patient and able to work well with lots of different people. Entrepreneurial and ambitious, keen to help develop the New Statesman’s video operation and grow our business.
