One Guitar is a new podcast created and hosted by ARIA Award winning singer, songwriter, composer, and founder of Oh Mercy and Perfect Moment Alex Gow. The podcast, co-produced by the Mushroom Group, will premiere exclusively on the LiSTNR app.

The guitar, a single Gibson J45, has travelled thousands of kilometres around the country over the course of 12 months and into the hands of Australia’s best singer songwriters. They each get four weeks with the guitar to write a new song after which they join host Alex Gow on the podcast where they perform the song and speak about the process. The guitar then hits the road en route to the next songwriter.

Each episode is a fresh exploration of a new creation using the same instrument.

Throughout the series Alex speaks with singer songwriter and music royalty Paul Kelly, singer songwriter Alice Skye, singer songwriter and Powderfinger lead vocalist Bernard Fanning, singer songwriter and record producer Sarah Blasko and Johnny Took of DMA’S.

Alex Gow said, “One Guitar podcast runs an x-ray over the alchemy of song writing to reveal the poetry of the process. I wanted to dissolve an unhealthy barrier built between the novice songwriter and that same writer granting themselves permission to be a songwriter. That barrier is the mystification of the process, the alchemising of song writing. The best way I could think to achieve it would be to say, sure, there’s only one guitar, but there are six strings and an infinite number of ways you can use them to express yourself. And it isn’t divine providence that makes the writer, it’s trial and error, attention to details, and practice.”

LiSTNR Music Content Director, Adam Williscroft, said: “The concept of One Guitar that fascinated artists the calibre of Bernard Fanning and Paul Kelly also resonated with us. To hear brand new songs by these artists, and the stories they each share as they pass the guitar on – is compelling. SCA is proud to spotlight Australian artistry on all levels with this exciting new podcast.”

One Guitar is exclusively available on the LiSTNR app until 6 September 2021, and episodes will be available from Monday, 2 August 2021.
